Preparing for the Installation
Before we delve into the installation process, let's ensure that you have all the necessary tools and materials at hand:
- DRLsDirect RGB+W DRL Replacement Kit
- Dremel tool or small saw
- Oven (optional)
- 7mm socket wrench
- T10 Torx screwdriver
- Paper clip
- Razor blade
- Strip caulk
- Vulcanized silicone
- Exacto knife
Once you have gathered all the required tools and materials, we can proceed with the installation steps.
Step 1: Removing the Air Inductor and Opening the Headlight
To kickstart the installation process, we need to remove the air inductor and gain access to the headlight assembly. Follow these steps:
- Begin by popping out the air inductor located on the front of your Dodge Challenger.
- Using a dremel tool or small saw, carefully cut the inside of the turn signal. Please note that this step cannot be accomplished by baking the headlight, so it's advisable to perform it as the initial step.
- Opening the headlight can be achieved through two methods. First, you can use a multi-tool and cut slowly around the lens. Alternatively, you can opt to bake your headlight in the oven for 10 to 12 minutes at 225 degrees Fahrenheit. After baking, remove the lens and set it aside.
Step 2: Installing the DRLsDirect DRL Boards
Now, let's proceed with installing the DRLsDirect DRL boards, which will introduce a captivating lighting effect to your vehicle. Follow these instructions:
- The DRLsDirect kit includes DRL boards for both the inner and outer lights. Carefully position the boards in their respective spots and place the diffuser rings back on top.
- Reinstall the T10 Torx screws, ensuring that they are not overtightened against the LED chips.
Step 3: Routing the Wires
During this step, we will ensure a clean and secure installation by appropriately routing the wires. Follow these instructions:
- Choose the best wire routing path, taking into consideration options such as the dust cap and filter.
- Utilize a razor blade to cut small slits in the air vents on the side, allowing for efficient wire routing.
- As the DRL connector head might be too wide for the vents, use a paper clip to gently push down the metal pins inside the connector head. Take care not to push the pins too far down, as you will need to reconnect them later.
- To facilitate wire routing, we recommend twisting the wires before inserting them into the air vents. Route both wires through the vents and pull them tightly as you push the bezel back into place on the housing.
Step 4: Reassembling the Headlight
It's time to reassemble the headlight, ensuring that all components are securely in place. Follow these steps:
- Reconnectthe block plug back into the circuit board to prevent it from banging around while driving.
- Reinstall the five 7mm bolts to secure the bezel back onto the housing.
- Seal up the air vents using strip caulk to prevent moisture from entering the back of the headlight.
- Using an Exacto knife, gently raise the tabs on the metal pins and reinsert them back into the connector head in the same order they were removed. This step is crucial to ensure proper synchronization of your lights' colors.
- Connect the wires from the DRLsDirect kit to the drivers and the remote, ensuring that the correct wires are aligned (red wire to red wire, blue wire to blue wire, etc.).
- Before completing the installation, it is highly recommended to test your lights. Use your smartphone and the Happy Lighting app to verify that the lights are functioning as expected.
Step 5: Resealing the Headlight
To ensure a watertight seal and protect your newly installed DRL boards, follow these final steps:
- Set the housing back into place, ensuring that it aligns properly.
- Use a room-temperature vulcanized silicone, such as the one provided by DRLsDirect when you order your DRLs online, and lay a solid bead of sealant around the edge of the lens.
- Smooth over any excess sealant and let your lights dry according to the silicone's label instructions.
